Per-order modification cap (25?) for trailing SL-L orders on Nifty options, plus order-to-trade

Hi team,

I run an options scalping algo on Kite Connect and want to move my stops from bot-side polling to exchange-held SL-L orders that I trail with the modify API. Could you please confirm:

Modification cap. On 5 Oct 2026 I tested a regular LIMIT order on NIFTY26O1321000PE. 25 modify calls succeeded and the 26th and later ones failed with "Failed to modify order". Is 25 the current per-order cap? Does it apply equally to LIMIT, SL and SL-L, trigger and price changes, and API and web? Can it be raised for registered algo users, and what is the exact error message?

Cancel and replace. Does cancel and replace reset the count? Does a new order count toward the 3,000 orders a day limit (modifications and cancels do not)?

SL-L on index options. For SELL SL-L on Nifty options, what is the allowed gap between trigger and limit (price bands, "limit price worse than trigger" rules)? What happens if the market gaps through the limit: does the order stay pending in the book? Is there a recommended way to make SL-L behave like SL-M?

Rate limits. What are the current per-second and per-minute limits for place, modify and cancel calls? Is there any penalty for hitting them?

Order-to-trade ratio. Do frequent modifications attract NSE order-to-trade ratio charges or algo monitoring for a small account like ours? Where is the threshold documented?

Market protection. Is market_protection mandatory for MARKET and SL-M orders (and for SL-L, if at all) on options from 1 April 2026, and what are the accepted values?

Speed. What is the typical time from a modify request to the exchange confirming it, and is a "MODIFY PENDING" status that lasts several seconds normal?

Thank you,
Vatsal K

Please find the concise clarification below:

    1. Per-order modification limit:A maximum of 25 modifications per order applies, including SL/SL-L orders. Once reached, the order must be cancelled and a fresh order placed.

    2. Cancel and replace:A new order gets a fresh modification count. However, the new order counts towards the 5,000 daily order-placement limit. Cancellations and modifications do not count towards this limit.

    3. SL-L orders: Both trigger and limit prices are required. SL-L orders are subject to applicable exchange price-range restrictions. SL-M is not supported for options; an SL-L order can be configured similarly by placing the limit price sufficiently away from the trigger.

    4. API rate limits: Order-related API requests are subject to a 10 requests/second rate limit. Exceeding the limit may result in a 429 response. This is separate from the 25-modification limit.

    5. OTR: The 25-modification limit is separate from exchange-level Order-to-Trade Ratio monitoring. We conduct OTR surveillance, and repeated orders or modifications at significantly away prices may be flagged as part of the surveillance process. Such cases are assessed based on the overall activity, and there are no fixed exchange norms for such instances.

    6. Market protection: `market_protection` applies to MARKET and SL-M orders, not SL-L orders. Documentation.

    7. Modification status: A successful modify-order API response confirms that the request was accepted by the API, not necessarily by the exchange. Check the order status/history for the final status.

For a trailing SL-L strategy, we recommend tracking modifications for each `order_id` and using cancel-and-replace before reaching the 25-modification limit if further trailing is required.
