In your linked thread, it says that the net = margin available. However, at the time when I called the margins API method, I had a decent amount in my Zerodha account, however it just showed 0 as you can see in the image. How to resolve this? Thanks!
like that where not only am I not able to see the Available Margins, it also shows NFO enabled to be False. 
margins = kite.margins("NSE")
and got a similar result.

It only accepts equity and commodity. Not an exchange value.
